What Is Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams delivers chat, meetings, and collaboration inside Microsoft 365. Enterprise PSTN needs Phone System or Direct Routing plus trunk and SBC planning.

Microsoft Teams is a unified communications (UC) platform in Microsoft 365 that combines chat, channels, meetings, file sharing, and app integration in one client. The practical answer to «what is it?»: a team collaboration hub—it does not replace a branch PBX by itself. Enterprise voice needs Phone System add-on, operator Calling Plan, or Direct Routing with carrier SIP trunk; most field designs also use a Session Border Controller (SBC). License bundles (E3, E5, Teams Phone, Audio Conferencing) vary by region, channel, and enterprise agreement—read the license matrix and local operator terms before purchase.

Teams building blocks and voice

Collaboration includes 1:1 chat, team channels, mentions, and threads. Files usually link to SharePoint/OneDrive for the channel; version history and co-editing continue in Office apps. Meetings cover ad hoc calls, scheduled meetings, external guests, and recording (policy-dependent). Webinars and Town Hall need specific licenses—do not assume «everything included».

Voice and PSTN access are optional inside Teams. Microsoft Calling Plan allocates numbers from Microsoft operator infrastructure—simpler setup but number port and emergency (112) rules may be limited by country. With Direct Routing, your SIP trunk connects to Teams through an SBC; configure number porting, codecs (G.711, SILK, etc.), and TLS/SRTP per operator and SBC docs. Contact centers needing heavy queue, IVR, and reporting may outgrow native Teams features—consider separate CCaaS or hybrid PBX.

  • Chat, channels, files, and apps in one window
  • Meetings, screen share, optional phone number
  • Phone System, Calling Plan, or Direct Routing + SBC
  • Identity: Entra ID (Azure AD), MFA, conditional access
  • Compliance: eDiscovery, retention, recording, DLP (license-dependent)

Teams fits office softphone, remote work, and single sign-on with Microsoft 365. Factories or field lines can pair Teams-certified IP phones with desktop experience. Migration projects need a separate voice design file for DID inventory, emergency location (ELIN), call recording, and retention—«we bought Teams licenses» is not enough.

In hybrid setups, branch PBX or IP PBX SIP trunk bridges to Teams via SBC; production cutover without pilot users and rollback increases outage risk. QoS (DSCP), segmentation, and wireless density directly affect voice. Define first-line Microsoft 365 versus voice line versus carrier support in contract to reduce SLA ambiguity.

In discovery, list current phone system, trunk capacity, and concurrent calls; then choose Calling Plan or Direct Routing. Validate SIP trunk parameters with the carrier. Do not recommend full migration without porting schedule and 112 tests in pilot. Questions: contact form.
